What is Facial Asymmetry?

Facial asymmetry refers to a condition in which features of one side of the face don’t match with the other side of the face.  This can involve differences in the size, shape, or position of features such as the eyes, nose, lips, cheekbones, and jawline.  It even applies to skin tone, texture, and clarity.  Facial asymmetry can be present at birth or develop later in life due to injury, trauma, lifestyle, or conditions such as Bell’s palsy or stroke.  In some cases, facial asymmetry may cause functional problems, such as difficulty speaking or eating.  In other cases, it may be purely cosmetic and affect self-esteem.  There are unintended consequences of daily activities such as driving on long commutes with excessive sun exposure to one side of the face or sleeping on the stomach or one side that can cause asymmetry. Treatments available for facial asymmetry can vary depending on the cause and severity of the asymmetry and may include surgical and non-surgical procedures.

The Problem with Asymmetry

Most of us have some degree of asymmetry.  It can cause us to feel self-conscious about our appearance, be a source of insecurity, and result in low self-esteem.  It can also make us unique and adds character, but not everyone feels that way.

Some individuals with facial asymmetry may feel embarrassed or ashamed in social situations, especially if they are frequently the focus of attention because of their appearance.  Avoiding photos and social events can have long term effects and negatively impact precious moments and cherished memories.

Facial asymmetry can cause undue stress and anxiety, especially if it is noticeable or affects one’s ability to speak or eat.  It can limit one’s professional and personal growth. Often times, facial asymmetry can lead to feelings of depression or social withdrawal. Depression has serious consequences on people’s mental, emotional, and physical health, along with the wellness of those around them.

Are There Nonsurgical Solutions to Asymmetry?

There are several non-invasive treatments available for facial asymmetry, including:

  • Botox/Dysport/Daxxify: Neuromodulator injections can be used to temporarily relax the muscles at injection sites and doses are individualized based on treatment area and each side of the face, which can help to balance out asymmetry.
  • Dermal fillers: Dermal fillers can be used to add volume to areas of the face that are deficient, which can help to balance out asymmetry.
  • Microcurrent facials: The use of microcurrent in facials can help to improve symmetry by focusing on strengthening specific muscles, lifting targeted areas, and balancing out the face.
  • Facial massage: Facial massage can help to improve blood flow, promote lymphatic drainage, and reduce puffiness and bloating, which can help to improve the overall appearance of the face, relax muscles, and reduce asymmetry.
  • Photorejuvenation: Laser photorejuvenation and SkinTyte are light and heat-based treatments that can help to reduce the appearance of dark spots and discoloration as well as lax skin, which can help to improve overall facial symmetry.
  • Chemical peels: Cosmelan is the world’s top depigmenation method that removes the outermost layer of skin to improve hyperpigmentation and suppresses melanocyte activity that produces pigment.
  • Non-ablative, fractional resurfacing and microneedling: Treatments such as SkinPen microneedling and Moxi laser resurfacing improve the texture of the skin including scars, active acne, lines, and wrinkles.

Actual Case Study

A woman visited us for a consultation.  She was brutally attacked five years ago.  She was mugged on the streets of Philadelphia, beaten, and left with severe injuries including a broken jaw.  She was seeking improvement in the appearance of a scar on her lip as a result of this senseless attack.  We were able to conceal the scar with the use of RHA 2 filler and when she smiles now, she does so with confidence.  It was so rewarding to restore her beautiful smile and more importantly, her self-esteem.  The outcome exceeded her expectations.
